Demystifying the Graduate Recruitment Process

Hear from ThirdEye Graduate Technology Consultant Madeline as she illustrates her graduate recruitment journey.

We sat down with Madeline, one of our Graduate Technology Consultants to demystify the recruitment process. With insights into her unique journey as well as ThirdEye's approach to hiring the next generation of talent, explore our detailed Q&A below.

What made you apply to ThirdEye in the first place?
I applied to ThirdEye because I found the intersection between technology and tangible, real-world results really interesting. After hearing about Salesforce and the technology they use, I wanted the chance to experience first-hand what it was actually like to work in that environment and see how technology can drive real business outcomes. The opportunity to work across different verticals was also really exciting. After completing my degree in Neuroscience, I wanted to move into something more commercially focused and practical, while still using the analytical and problem-solving skills I developed through my degree. This made ThirdEye a great fit!

How much research did you do on ThirdEye beforehand, and did it help?
I did a fair bit of research beforehand. I looked through the ThirdEye website, particularly the case studies, which gave me a good understanding of the real-world projects they work on and the different verticals they operate across. I also looked into the company culture to get a better sense of what it would be like to work there. Beyond ThirdEye, I researched Salesforce and the technology more broadly to understand how it works and how it is implemented in real-world businesses. This definitely helped me feel more prepared and gave me a much better understanding of the company and the role.

What did you focus on when putting your CV together?
When putting my CV together, I focused on understanding the experience and skills ThirdEye was looking for and highlighting how my previous internships had prepared me for the role. I also looked at how my degree and research experience were relevant, particularly my experience with data analysis and understanding the real-world impact of data. Overall, I wanted to make sure I was clearly showcasing the skills and experiences that were most relevant to the role.

How did you prepare for the interviews or assessment centre?
I prepared for the assessment centre by looking through ThirdEye’s case studies to understand how they implement solutions and how they use Salesforce to solve real-world problems. I then researched the different Salesforce products and solutions so I had a broader understanding of the technology. Finally, I practised questions that might come up in a Technical Consultant interview. Putting all of this together helped me feel much more prepared and confident going into the assessment day.

What surprised you most about the process?
I think I was most surprised by the assessment day. I’d been to other assessment days before, so I had a general idea of what to expect, but I didn’t expect the company culture to come through so strongly. Everyone was really welcoming and approachable, which made the day feel much more relaxed and enjoyable than I expected.

What do you wish you'd known before you started?
Before I started, I wish I had known more about my own presenting style. While the role is technical, there are many occasions where you’ll be expected to deliver presentations and run sessions. I think understanding my own unique presenting style, as well as having the opportunity to practise and develop it, would have been really useful to know and focus on before I started.

What role did your degree or background play?
My degree in Neuroscience with AI gave me a strong foundation for the role. As a student, I had already given presentations, which helped me feel more comfortable speaking in front of others. I also gained a lot of experience working with data and became familiar with Python, which has been particularly helpful when working on the more technical side of the role. My degree also taught me how to approach complex problems, analyse information and learn new concepts quickly, which has been valuable in consulting.

What's one myth about tech consulting recruitment you'd like to bust?
One myth I’d like to bust is that you need to have everything figured out before joining tech consulting. While having a strong technical or scientific background is important, you’re not expected to know everything from day one. A big part of the graduate experience is learning on the job, developing your consulting skills, and becoming more confident in applying your technical knowledge to different problems and client situations.

Was there a moment where you thought "this is the right fit"?
Probably during my first week. I was struck not only by how kind and welcoming everyone at ThirdEye was, but also by how knowledgeable and intelligent the people around me were. It made me feel like I was in an environment where I could learn from others, challenge myself and continue to grow, which made me feel like it was the right fit for me.

What advice would you give a graduate applying this year?
I’d say focus on your strengths and what you can bring to the role, rather than trying to be someone you’re not. I’d also recommend taking some time to understand what ThirdEye does and finding an area of the work that genuinely interests you. Being able to show that you’re curious about the work and excited to learn will go a long way.
