Hear from Callum, one of our Consultants who joined via our Graduate Programme, to understand what makes a successful grad. Diving into his own experiences and learnings, see the details that really make an impression.
What does a 'successful' grad look like in your view?
I think a successful grad is the opposite of a set template, as the most successful grads at ThirdEye are individuals who have their own passions and interests. A strong theme of the work during the grad scheme is building your own personal brand where you can be a subject matter expert on areas you are passionate and curious about.
What's been your biggest learning curve?
My biggest learning curve has been adapting to the feedback culture. Constructive feedback is a core part of working at ThirdEye, especially in early years, so learning how to take this onboard and implement it in my daily work was a major part of my learning process.
How would you describe the culture for future grads?
I would describe the culture of the grad scheme and ThirdEye as a whole as very supportive and welcoming. Across the board, it feels like everyone wants to help others succeed and will set aside their own time to assist you in your development and work.
How do you balance building your technical skills with client-facing ones?
This development really goes hand-in-hand during the grad scheme at ThirdEye. All the work we do during development and other areas for clients will be regularly demonstrated back, offering you the ability to refine both your technical skills and work on communication and other client-facing skills.
How important is proactivity or curiosity in succeeding here?
I think these qualities are the key to separating what makes a good grad from a great one. Curious and proactive grads go above and beyond the curriculum and focus on their personal interests and then go one step further and share their learnings with others in the company. This can help establish you as an expert in certain areas and even steer the way your future work continues.
What does success look like beyond just doing the job well?
Outside of doing the job well, success for me is really just going above and beyond. Focusing on your own personal development and interests and taking any opportunity to share your learnings and work with the team is a fantastic opportunity to progress yourself and build your brand within the business.
How do you handle feedback, both positive and constructive?
I think for constructive feedback the main area of focus should be understanding the perspective of the person providing you feedback and identifying where you can improve - and then proactively looking for opportunities to put these improvements into practive across your workflow. It's easier to receive positive feedback, but I do think it is really important to once again think about why this feedback has been given to ensure you can continue to deliver the areas of work that are landing well - and even improve in the future.
What would you tell your first-day self now?
Enjoy the ride! When you first start it feels like there is a long time in the grad scheme and, while this is true, it really does fly by - taking the time to regularly reflect on your experience really helps focus on how far you've come.
Where do you see yourself in a few years, and how is ThirdEye supporting that?
Through my work in the grad scheme at ThirdEye (and due to the general tech landscape at this point in time) I've developed a real passion for the creation of and work with AI Agents. ThirdEye has supported this all the way, by putting me on projects related to my interests, surfacing enablement opportunities, and allowing me to invest time into personal development in this area.
